Satellite Operator (m/f/d)

Permanent employee, Full-time · Munich

The Mission
Munich-based OroraTech is developing a constellation of nano-satellites with thermal infrared cameras for automated wildfire detection, severe weather warnings and many other applications. Following the launches of our hosted payload missions, FOREST-1 in January 2022 and FOREST-2 in June 2023, our upcoming FOREST-3 mission drives us closer to vertical integration as we embark on constructing our own satellite platform. We are looking for a talented engineer to prepare and carry out the satellite operations, focusing particularly on the spacecraft's most pivotal life phase: the Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP). The best candidate will be joining a very motivated and highly enthusiastic team of experts in the fields of mechanical, optics, electronics, spacecraft, and software engineering.
What you’ll be doing

As a Satellite Operator you will:

  • Implement and oversee the spacecraft’s LEOP, ensuring a successful transition from launch to operational orbit.

  • Have full ownership of the development and maintenance of the satellite.

  • Continuously monitor and control the CubeSat operations to optimize Earth observation performance and data acquisition.

  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve any technical anomalies to minimize interruptions in mission operations.

  • Analyze and process telemetry data to ensure the health and safety of the satellite’s systems.

  • Generate regular status reports on the spacecraft’s performance, mission progress, and notable events.

  • Provide expert guidance on operational improvements and future mission planning considerations.

  • Develop and configure utility tools: data visualization dashboards, health monitoring watchers, task automation routines, helper scripts, etc.

Relevant Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline is required. Advanced degrees are preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in satellite mission control operations, with direct involvement in LEOP and commissioning phases.

  • Specific experience with Earth observation satellite systems is highly desirable.

  • Good understanding of orbital mechanics and space environment related risks.

  • Strong knowledge of satellite ground systems, tracking networks, and command & control protocols.

  • Ability to assess and interpret satellite telemetry for operational decision-making.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python programming, coupled with a foundational knowledge of Linux, bash scripting, and version control using Git.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure during critical mission phases.

  • Fluent in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective teamwork and report documentation.
