Team Lead Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) & Data Quality (m/f/d)

Permanent employee, Full-time · Munich

The Mission

OroraTech is building the leading thermal intelligence platform from space—and data quality is at the heart of that mission. As our Team Lead for Calibration & Validation (Cal/Val) and Data Quality, you will play a mission-critical role in ensuring that our Earth observation products are not only technically precise but trusted by scientists, partners, and clients worldwide.

With 18+ sensors in orbit, this role is central to the integrity of OroraTech’s Level 0–2 data products. You will architect scalable, end-to-end Cal/Val frameworks that uphold the highest standards of radiometric and geolocation accuracy, monitor instrument performance, and support mission-wide consistency across our growing constellation.

But your impact goes far beyond the technical. You’ll lead and mentor a high-performing team of experts, building a culture of technical excellence, trust, and shared ownership. We believe that great work only happens in great teams—and this role is about creating the environment where that becomes reality. You’ll foster deep technical mastery, cross-functional collaboration, and a spirit of continuous learning and improvement.

Externally, will serve as a visible representative of OroraTech’s data credibility—representing us in elite forums such as NASA’s JACIE, CEOS, VH-RODA, the ESA MPC, and in partnerships with USGS and NASA. Top-tier candidates will bring the technical confidence, systems-level thinking, and leadership presence required to drive strategic collaborations, lead client-facing validation studies, and transform scientific rigor into commercial value that differentiates us in a fast-moving Earth observation market.

What you’ll be doing

Strategic Calibration & Validation Oversight

  • Ensure 100% validation of critical data products in partnership with at least two recognized external reference institutions (e.g., NASA, ESA, CSDA)

  • Lead end-to-end Cal/Val campaign planning and execution for 18+ sensors—coordinating internal teams, partners, and customer-facing studies

  • Deliver quarterly, science-grade data quality reports and reusable documentation to support product development, compliance, and commercial adoption

Workflow Automation for Scale

  • Drive implementation of automated Cal/Val workflows to reduce manual workload by 50%, ensuring scalable and repeatable processes across missions.

  • Establish Observability on quality for our main data products: L1 Radiance/BT, L2 Active Fire and L2 LST.

Data Product Stewardship:

  • Manage and evolve robust reference datasets (e.g., moon, deep space, ground sites)

  • Lead internal quality assurance workflows to align with international standards

External Communication:

  • Represent OroraTech in top-tier scientific and industry forums (e.g., JACIE, VH-RODA, ESA MPC)

  • Author peer-reviewed publications and whitepapers to support pre-sales, onboarding, and long-term industry leadership

  • Build and sustain high-value relationships with external scientific and commercial partners

Chapter Leadership:

  • Lead and mentor the Calibration & Validation (Cal/Val) Team in a matrix organization, empowering individuals to grow as technical experts and collaborative team members.

  • Support personal and professional development through regular feedback, coaching, and alignment with career goals.

  • Guide team members working across SCRUM teams to deliver high-quality contributions to both product and project work.

  • Facilitate alignment across teams, helping individuals connect their work to broader organizational goals.
